Everyone has to go to Florence at least once and most people will
return again. There are so many exceptional things to see, it's
impossible to do the place justice in a single visit. But a day trip can
still be intensely enjoyable, provided you focus ruthlessly on a limited
number of chosen objectives. Seeing the entire collection in the Uffizi
not being a good one to choose! Entrance tickets for a specific time of
day can be booked on-line for the major galleries and museums.
Doing this in advance is absolutely essential in the summer, as the
queues for the main sights are unreal. To do this, follow this link to
the firenze.net site, the museum/gallery section can be reached from
the sidebar on the left of the firenze.net page.
Because it gets so crowded during the holiday season, driving to
Florence is not a good idea, as parking is a big problem and getting in
and out of the city wastes too much time. So, a stress-free alternative
from Mazzaforte is to drive to Terontola (not far from Cortona), park
the car and catch the train. There are two trains every hour. You'll
find a timetable at Mazzaforte, or online at Trenitalia.
